MARCHING SEASON

The Louisville Marching Band meets daily the last period and after school until 5:00 P.M. Contemporary marching band activities are emphasized. The activities of the marching band are designed to offer the student an opportunity to grow musically and personally through participation at football games, parades, competitions, festivals, etc. All band members must participate in marching band, unless there is a physical problem, you participate in a fall sport (excluding cross country - members of the cross country team will participate in marching band), or you are a cheerleader.
In order to perform with the marching band, the marching band member must have received passing grades during the preceding grading period in subjects that earn a minimum of 5.0 credits per year toward graduation.

Marching Percussion Requirements
During marching season, percussion students will be utilized playing instruments in five different areas. The instruments that will be played are as follows: Sideline (Pit) percussion, cymbals, bass drum, quads, and snare drum. Minimum level requirements for playing the marching instruments are as follows:
Sideline (Pit) Percussion Level III (Mallets & Battery)
Cymbals Level III (Battery)
Bass Drum Level III (Battery)
Quads Level IV (Battery)
Snare Drum Level V (Battery)
Instrumentation will be based on the number of students available. If the number of percussion students is inadequate to fill a balanced instrumentation, wind players may be recruited to play at the discretion of the directors.
Level requirements must be passed prior to the end of the school year. If auditions are necessary, they will be conducted prior to the end of the school year. Times and materials for the auditions will be established at the discretion of the director.

MAJORETTE LINE
a. Auditions are open to all students who will be in 9th, 10th or 11th grade and all previous majorettes in good standing. These auditions will be held in the spring preceding the fall marching season. Audition guidelines will be distributed to all interested students prior to the audition. All students trying out must pass Level III before the tryout date.
b. A feature twirler will or will not be chosen at the discretion of the directors with the selection being based upon results of the auditions regardless of class.
c. A head majorette will be chosen from either the junior or senior class at the discretion of the directors. The selection will be based upon results of the auditions and leadership qualities. The candidate for head majorette must have passed level V or VI before tryouts.
d. If two or fewer students tryout, the two students must be no more than one level apart before tryouts.
e. If only one student auditions he/she must have passed level V or VI before tryouts.

FLAG CORPS
a. Auditions are open to all students who will be in 9th-12th grades and all previous flag corps members in good standing. These auditions will be held in the spring preceding the fall marching season. Audition guidelines will be distributed to all interested students prior to the audition. All students trying out must pass Level III before the tryout date.
b. A flag captain may or may not be chosen each year at the discretion of the directors. To be eligible to tryout for captain, the student must pass level V or VI before the tryout date.
c. Purpose: To contribute to and enhance the musical performance of the band on the field as the music dictates.
